CCTV in our centres
Prior to the announcement of new Government reforms for CCTV, G8 Education committed to accelerating the rollout of CCTV to all our centres in Australia. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen child safety policies, procedures, and practices.
The rollout will take place in stages, and we will provide families and team members with updates as the project progresses. We are committed to meeting all child safety, privacy, and data security requirements, and will comply with all relevant Australian laws and regulations.
The project is currently in the design and procurement phase, so some details are still being finalised. We will continue to share updates as the rollout advances.
Frequently asked questions
We are accelerating the rollout of CCTV across our centres to help strengthen child safety and support our ongoing child protection practices. All CCTV use will comply with relevant Australian laws and regulations for privacy, data security, and safe storage. The rollout will happen in stages, and we will keep families and team members updated along the way.
CCTV helps keep children safe by monitoring shared areas and supporting investigations if incidents occur. It provides an extra layer of protection so team members can focus on caring for children in a secure environment.
CCTV helps create a safer workplace by allowing us to review incidents and support investigations, ensuring team members can work in a protected and well-managed environment.
Exact locations are still being determined however we can confirm that cameras will be located and capture footage in accordance with all relevant Australian laws and regulations.
Access will be tightly controlled and limited to authorised team members only. All access will be logged, monitored, and auditable.
This will be confirmed during system design, and in compliance with all relevant legislative requirements. Typically, footage is stored securely for a short period (for example, 30 days) before being automatically and securely deleted, unless required to be held for an incident or investigation.
CCTV will not be used to monitor team member performance on a live basis. However, team member conduct may be assessed in the event of a concern being raised, an incident occurring or investigation being undertaken.
A limited number of our centres require additional live CCTV cameras to assist in monitoring certain rooms, however those cameras do not store footage and are used for supervision and safety purposes only. Otherwise, CCTV will not be continuously monitored. Footage will be accessed if there is a specific incident, concern, or investigation, and only by authorised personnel.
As part of the rollout, CCTV will be introduced through a centralised project to ensure every centre meets the same safety, privacy, and data security standards. Locally installed CCTV devices will not be permitted.
If your centre already has CCTV, it will be reviewed as part of the project. Existing systems may need to be upgraded or replaced to meet G8’s standards for safety, privacy, and data security. Centres will not be permitted to make changes or install new systems independently.
The solution is still being designed, however data security is a core part of the project. Footage will be stored in Australia, with strict access controls, monitoring, and supplier security compliance built into the system design.
As part of the design process, strong data security protections are being built in. Any unauthorised access to footage or to the system will be reviewed by the G8 Privacy Officer and the Head of Cyber Security in accordance with our policies and any requirements of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and any other applicable regulations.
We are currently in the design and procurement phase. Installation timelines will be communicated when suppliers and solutions are confirmed.
Protecting privacy is central to the project. Cameras will only be in appropriate shared spaces, signage will be displayed, and all policies and procedures will adhere to relevant Australian privacy laws and other applicable legislation.
We understand that some families do not permit photographs of their children to be shared or used for marketing or on platforms like Xplor. We respect these preferences and CCTV footage will never be used for these purposes. CCTV will only be used for safety, protection, and incident review and investigation as outlined above.
Families will be notified of the presence of CCTV cameras, and footage will be used solely for the purposes described above.
