CCTV in our centres

We are rolling out CCTV as part of our commitment to strengthening child safety and supporting our ongoing child protection practices. All CCTV usage will comply with applicable Australian laws and regulations for privacy, data security, and the secure storage of information. The rollout will occur in stages, and we will keep families and team members updated along the way.

CCTV provides an additional safeguard by supporting the safety and wellbeing of children and providing a review mechanism when an alleged incident occurs, complaint is made or a concern arises which requires investigation.

CCTV supports a safer workplace by providing an independent record which can assist in investigations of alleged incidents and complaints.

All CCTV cameras will be clearly visible and capture CCTV footage in accordance with all applicable Commonwealth and State laws and regulations. Specific camera locations will vary from centre to centre.

CCTV cameras may be located in the following areas of centres and, where applicable, support offices (Included Areas):

• External play areas
• Education rooms / internal play areas
• Communal areas, such as reception or passages
• Yard areas not licensed for children (e.g. service areas)
• Kitchens
• Entrances
• Sleep or cot rooms
• Car parks

CCTV cameras will not be located in the following areas (Excluded Areas):

• Bathrooms for children, Team Members and visitors
• Nappy change rooms
• Employee changing facilities
• Staff rooms
• Any areas designated for breastfeeding (which does not include breastfeeding that occurs in Included Areas)
• Any areas designated for prayer (which does not include prayer that occurs in Included Areas).

Access to CCTV footage will be limited to authorised persons with a legitimate legal, regulatory or operational purpose, in accordance with the CCTV Policy.

Access to CCTV Footage will be limited to:

• Authorised Team Members; or
• Authorised persons within G8’s CCTV suppliers and support team, with responsibility for ensuring security and functionality of the CCTV system.

All access to CCTV footage by Authorised Team Members, CCTV suppliers and support team is logged, monitored, and auditable.

CCTV footage will be kept for 30 days and then automatically and securely deleted.

In some cases, footage may need to be retained for longer for a purpose set out in our CCTV Policy or as required by law.

CCTV will not be used to for continuous or routine monitoring of team member performance on a live basis, or covert surveillance. However, monitoring may occur in the event of an alleged incident, complaint or concern being raised, and where an investigation is being undertaken, as set out in our CCTV Policy.

CCTV will not be continuously monitored. CCTV footage will only be accessed by authorised team members when there is an alleged incident, complaint, concern, or investigation.

A limited number of our centres require a live camera feed to be displayed on a monitor as a result of centre layout or a service approval condition. Live camera feeds are only viewed in real time.

As part of the rollout, CCTV will be introduced through a centralised project to ensure every centre meets the same safety, privacy, and data security standards. Locally installed CCTV devices will not be permitted.

If your centre already has CCTV, it will be reviewed as part of the project. Centres will not be permitted to make changes or install new systems independently.

Your data will be protected using multiple layers of security built into the platform.

All CCTV footage is encrypted both when it is transmitted and when it is stored, helping to prevent unauthorised access. CCTV footage will be stored securely in Australia. Access to the system is restricted to authorised users only, with permissions based on their role and responsibilities. All access and activity within the system is logged and can be audited.

To keep CCTV footage secure, G8 uses measures such as:

• Restricting access to authorised personnel who require it for legitimate operational or legal purposes.
• Using secure methods to store and transmit footage.
• Monitoring for unauthorised access and investigating any incidents that occur.
• Regularly reviewing access records and system activity.

Protecting the security of CCTV footage is a priority. A range of safeguards are built into the system to help prevent unauthorised access.

If unauthorised access to the system or footage is identified, it will be investigated by G8’s Privacy Officer and Head of Cyber Security in line with G8 policies, the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), and any other applicable legal requirements.

We are currently in the design finalisation and pilot phase. Installation at selected Pilot centres will commence in late September. Installation for remaining centres will be communicated when confirmed.

Cameras will only be installed in appropriate shared spaces, and clear signage at centres will let people know where CCTV is in operation.

G8 will manage CCTV through consistent policies and procedures across all centres and support offices, helping to ensure the same privacy, safety, and data security standards are applied everywhere.

The use of CCTV will comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and other applicable laws.

We understand that some families do not permit photographs of their children to be shared or used for marketing or on platforms like Xplor. CCTV footage will never be used for these purposes. CCTV footage will only be used for safety, protection, incident review and investigation as in our CCTV Policy.

Families will be notified of the presence of CCTV cameras.

G8 may use AI to conduct searches (for example, attribute searches for colour of clothing) across CCTV Footage where reasonably necessary for CCTV purposes.

Biometric information (such as that used in facial recognition technology) is not used as part of these searches.
